We are coming up on the 300th anniversary of the siege of Barcelona in the War of the Spanish Succession, as you are no doubt aware. What? Never heard of it? The war lasted from 1701 to 1714 and laid waste to large tracts of Europe, mostly in Spain. If you lived in Spain you would know all about it, as the topic of Catalan independence, three centuries after it was definitively lost with the fall of Barcelona, is currently looking ominously like a brewing crisis again.Into the ferment comesI love Albert Sanchez Pinol's novels and feel like I'm in on a very great secret in being an American fan of his work. Both his previous novels are creepy and imaginative and captivating works. In this novel, he veers into historical fiction and gives the account of the Siege of Barcelona as well as an overview of the War of Succession, a point of history I wasn't privy too previously. His avatar into this world is Martà ZuvirÃa, a character through whom Pinol brings the era to flesh. The novel
Wonderfully written, if you like history read this amazing entertaining, humorous and touching story of a young Catalonian engineer of defending and attacking fortresses.
Very good fictional read with some interesting background and insight on the relationship between Barcelona and Madrid in the present day
Wonderful when it stays put!Have publishers no sense at all? A brilliant book about a brilliant history. Well worth a read. Thought it was a little flat towards the end but I guess that was expected. Really enjoyed the illustrations, great edition.
Where to begin?...Granted I'm not the fastest reader in the world and I have limited time to read each day, but it took me nearly a month to finish this book. It is a commitment. At times, I felt like I was living the Barcelona siege in real time. To completely enjoy this book, I think you'd need to be much more interested in military techniques and strategy than I am. I was primarily reading it to try to better understand the current Catalan political climate and its bid for independence. While
