Reading the last letter from Hayati to Zainuddin got me really fucked up. She mentioned death a lot and at that moment I already know hows the story going to end. Whyyyy Zainuddin whyyy?? I feel like slapping him in the face if he was real. Yes. Hayati deserve that but hey? Too much ego will cause you everything bitches!
actual rating is 4.35. the major topic in this book is about love which is so beautifully written by the author between 2 lovebirds. it is about how people back then used to look up on cultural differences rather than pure love that they portrayed between each other. it is true that even nowadays pure love is very hard to find, and it is true that love based on wealth is not going to end well. to people who wanted to understand more about pure love and sacrifices, i would recommend this
Been reading this for three times I guess. Love this book. It's very heart wrenching and I can recall I cried when read it. The books deals with totally devastated love story that is said to be true story. But I don't know that. It's a very classic book that set in the early 1920s something. It is a good book that portrays representation of Minang culture which is a community from Sumatera Barat (west sumatera), Indonesia.
It is a classic that goes beyond romance, but rather in questioning our values and class discrimination which was prevalent in the past. The ending may not fare well to many readers but not all romance end well.
